SAHRR - Round One from Gene Black an Alabama Artist

After realizing that Gail's post was where I was supposed to share my center block, I realized that Kathleen's post was Round One.   (I was late to start and got confused. I posted my center block on Kathleen's linky - mea culpa!)  I did blog that center block - hopefully you saw it.

Kathleen offered the option of using a block that starts with your initial.  For me that would be a G.  So I Googled "quilt blocks that start with G"  and found the Geometry Block - along with a lot of others.
But, I thought "quilting is really ...

Friday check in: a finish + book club selections for January from With Strings Attached

I've bundled up for two forest preserve walks this week.  Fortunately the Kicks (S's car that I drive) stays warm so he is comfortable.

We are at the southern edge of the paper birch range.  Hickory nuts.  The icy snow sparkles.

All the Christmas decor is put away except for the wreath.  Each year I think about going through the storage boxes and culling decorations that I didn't use this year (or last year or the year before....) Then I think what if I want to change things up next season? So I just close up the ...

Friday check in: under the needle, and round robin revealed from With Strings Attached

After a couple of rainy days the sun has come out again so we've enjoyed afternoon outings to the forest preserves:  Indepdendence Grove on Thursday and Waukegan Savanna on Friday.

At the guild meeting on Wednesday we heard from the founder and director of The Penny's Purpose, an agency that collects and distributes blankets, comforters, and quilts to anyone in the area. (Kids in crisis, nursing homes, homeless shelters....anyone.)    This will be a great way to donate locally.

We also had the reveal for the 2024 round robin!  There was so much interest that there were two ...

Weekly update: glorious days, caught up already!, twenty blocks + recent reading from With Strings Attached

Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine!

Swans at Hastings Lake on Saturday.

Herons at Nippersink on Sunday.

Natalie Doan of Missouri Star was the guest speaker at the guild meeting Wednesday.  I didn't get any good pictures!   It was fun to hear her side of the family business.

This is the final month for the guild round robin.  I got right to work and added borders to CB's quilt.  I can't show you the entire flimsy until next month's reveal, but you can see one of the Tula Pink owls that AK added.

We got the pattern for block ...

Friday check in: sunrise, quilt book indulgence, and a surprise finish from With Strings Attached

The solstice was at 3:50 p.m. yesterday. I was at the lakefront this morning to see the sun rise at 5:16.

Used book sales, destashes, and publishers' warehouse clearance have been the source for most of the many, many quilt books I've acquired.   Just as with fabric--if I can't not buy them, then I need to get bargains.

This year I am really and truly paring down all that creative potential.  I've gone through a stack, sorting them into "totally unlikely to make anything from this" and "review again just in case."   Why is ...

Weekly update: workshop, component parts, and bargains from With Strings Attached

Dorothy asked if I had any queen-sized or thereabouts quilts available.  I had two that might do, and when the AAUW book group met at her retirement complex on Wednesday I took them.  She liked them both and bought  this one .  "It sleeps well," she reported.

I gave myself a birthday-month treat on Saturday.  A guild in the next county had openings for a workshop with Jane Sassaman.  (Thank you, Ann, for your encouragement!) My calendar was open and V was available to take care of Stevens.

Jane used her Moths and Moons pattern to teach us her applique technique ...

Projects on hand! from M. Brito de Campos

Weekly update: OMG finished, more estate sale bargains + reading from With Strings Attached

Cue Miss Rumphius!  The lupines are in bloom at Illinois Beach State Park.  I took the snapshots on Friday.

Our favorite plant/produce shop is open for the season.  Susan always comes out to say hi to Stevens.  One of her customers made a stack of "hug blankets" to give away to other customers who might need a hug so she presented this one to him.

I got geraniums for the front stoop -- and, hooray -- FIVE healthy rhubarb plants that Susan started from seed.  I'll plant them tomorrow.

Weekly update: an OMG decision + reading from With Strings Attached

A quick walk around Sand Pond on Saturday afternoon.

The egret was quite close--guarding a nest, perhaps?  Upper: sand cherry  (a bush). Lower: crabapple (obviously a tree); mullein.

We enjoyed A Flor de Piel who performed for the final Lake County Community Concert of the season.   The young singer (center) is only a senior in high school -- what a voice!  Their parents (left and right) are music educators in Chicago.

At the guild meeting last week I signed up for the upcoming round robin.  It will begin next month so I have to figure out my starter block (an orphan ...

Another Completed Tulip Quilt! from Quilty Folk

Here we are, more than halfway through August and I've barely finished my 8th quilt this year! Just not getting as much done this year. You'll probably have a hard time believing this, but I have went almost two weeks now without any hand quilting. Can you sense how itchy my fingers are getting? It was totally worthwhile as we got to see a lot of family, but wowsers. It's always so lovely to come back home!

Glory Be is finished!
It's been a long time since my husband and I have managed to get away ...

Triple Play! Sparkling Stars from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Sparkling Stars Triple Play by Jenny, Natalie, and Misty of the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

A Round Robin quilt is the sweetest of group projects. It is passed among friends, each adding blocks or borders of their own.

And when it is finished, that quilt represents the talent and creativity of everyone involved. (I get all tingly and sentimental just thinking about it!)

Sparkling Stars Triple Play by Jenny, Natalie, and Misty of the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

For this month’s Triple Play tutorial, Jenny and the girls stitched up one big Round Robin quilt. They named it Sparkling Stars, and it sure is a beauty!

Jenny built the center with 9-patches and half-square triangle lemoyne stars, Misty added pretty sawtooth star blocks and quarter-square triangles, and Natalie finished ...

October UFO's and PomPoms! from The Cozy Quilter

I finally made my September block for the Elgin Piecemakers Guild Comfort quilt project this past week! We were each to make a bird block with a gray background.  We had plans to meet outside in September in someone's backyard but it poured rain the night of our meeting and it got cancelled so now, the bird blocks will be handed in with the October blocks this month.  I had already made all of my blocks for the rest of the year in the spring so this was the last one to make for 2021.  I used a Riley ...

Knitting and Stitching! from The Cozy Quilter

Last week, I showed you the block I made for one of the TMQG members for a round robin of sorts.  That block was supposed to be done and mailed by the end of July, but I was obviously late!  In an attempt to be caught up by the end of August, I made these 4 blocks for D.  She had requested black and white with a pop of colour and some words that reflected the times we are in on her block.  I found some fabric in my stash with French words on it--Bonjour and Merci were the words ...

Sewing, knitting and embroidery from The Cozy Quilter

I have been participating in a round-robin quilt project with a group of 5 other quilters from the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild over the past few months.  We each made a centre block and then everyone else in the group makes a border or another block or two for each member of the group according to the style/colours chosen by the quilter.  This month, my block is for J.  Her block was pieced in an improv style with these colours.  I dug into my scrap bins and made her a block that I hope will compliment what she made ...

A Slow Week from The Cozy Quilter

Not much happened in the sewing room this week.  Major dental work on Tuesday followed by cataract surgery on both eyes on Thursday meant I spent lots of time lying on the couch and not much time sewing/knitting.  The good news...my tooth no longer hurts and I can see much better!  I am supposed to be limiting my screen time so this will be a shorter post than usual.  Hopefully, I will be back in the sewing room this week.

I made one block this week for a travelling quilt project that I am doing with 5 other ...

Placemat Production from The Cozy Quilter

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, aunts, grandmothers and others who nurture their friends and families!

I have been working hard this week to finish off my 12 placemats for Meals on Wheels.  I used up some of my batting scraps strips, zigzagged together for this project--the bin is still full...sigh. I fear that all of my scrap bins are bottomless, somewhat like Mary Poppin's duffle bag. The scraps for these three placemats are leftovers from a quilt I made for my aunt a couple of years ago.  The placemats are about 12” by 18”.

 I ...

Spring to Winter and Back to Spring Again from The Cozy Quilter

We had weird weather this week...Spring and then Winter and then Spring again!  Finn not too keen to go outside on Wednesday morning but did eventually do what he needed to do.  Then he stuck his face in the snow before coming back inside to snuggle with me on the couch while I hand stitched some binding on the placemats I made for Meals on Wheels.

It melted right away on the driveway and sidewalks so at least we did not have to shovel it!  By Friday, it had all melted and we were in our spring jackets again ...
